I’d like to start this blog by saying that I am not an acapella fan—at all. It’s common knowledge for those who know me personally that I am a sucker for the rock genre. Honestly, I don’t generally listen to acapella groups, not even if you pay me, no. But for Voiceplay covers, I’ll make a freaking exception!
I’ve been obsessing over Voiceplay for a year or two now. And yes, this is the extent of my fangirling. This write-up is prime proof of how much I love them; I just feel a strong need to ramble about how I adore these pretty wonderful and talented lads because—why not?
I’ll be sharing with you all the Voiceplay song covers I would rather die for than stop listening to. But before I start on my list, let me first introduce my gorgeous boys for the sake of those at the back who don’t know Voiceplay yet.
Voiceplay Members
Over the years, Voiceplay has had several members come and go, but that doesn’t make them less amazing. If anything, I think they hold a certain standard for their members because they just keep getting better. I don’t know much about vocals or singing, in general, but I sure as hell know they are ten times more awesome now.
And since I know nothing about the technicalities of music, I won’t talk dryly about their roles or nitpick on their style and techniques, but boy, I sure know what I love about each of them. So, that’s how I’ll describe each lad, based on the things I so worship dearly about them. Let us start with the group’s existing members.
Layne Stein (Vocal Percussion)
I am out of words to describe just how astonishingly talented Layne is. His beatboxing skill is beyond godlike. He is proficient in playing the piano, and although it doesn’t happen that much on their covers, he too can sing really well! Also, he does look cute when he tries to dance.
But the thing I wanted to highlight most is his exceptional theme and music arrangement skills. Most Voiceplay covers are arranged and directed by Layne and I firmly believe it takes a significant amount of art and creativity to bring out such masterpieces.
Eli Jacobson (Tenor 1)
I love all the boys equally, but if I am to pick a favorite, that’ll be Eli. Next to J None, Eli is my absolute freaking favorite!!! I am not quite sure what I adore most about him, but if I have to guess, probably the way he can switch voices. Sometimes, he sounds so soothing and divine, and other times, he just goes rogue and sing in a rock n roll raspy voice. I seriously can’t get enough of that!
And by far, he probably has the most impressive acting skill among the boys, at least for me. His facial reactions when singing is so expressively perfect.
Geoff Castellucci (Bass)
Let’s be honest, Geoff is the ultimate eye-candy of Voiceplay. Not gonna lie; I had my jaws dropped open when I first saw him. But his looks are not the only mesmerizing thing about him; have you heard him sing? His voice is so sexy; it melts knees. His voice range is also unbelievable!
He is literally a treat, but I love him extra when I hear him read books on his YouTube channel.
Cesar De La Rosa (Baritone/Tenor 2)
Cesar is relatively new in Voiceplay, replacing J None. And I don’t mean to be unfair, but to be honest, I still haven’t moved on from the fact that J left the group. So I’m still getting used to Cesar assuming J’s place.
Although, it’s worth pointing out that he is equally talented and very charismatic! Every time I see him sing, I just want to pinch those cute cheeks. I am totally excited to see more of him on future Voiceplay covers.
Former Voiceplay Members
These are the former members when I started becoming a fan.
Top 10 Favorite Voiceplay Covers
1. Little Mermaid Medley with Rachel Potter
You have no idea how many times I’ve listened to this song! I am not even a fan of Little Mermaid as a kid, but this is easily the best thing I have ever seen and heard in my life.
2. Oogie Boogie Song
This song is the reason why I am so obsessed with them. Geoff is a monster!
3. Moana Medley with Rachel Potter
I’ve seen this cover go viral on Facebook long before I became a fan. I was amazed by them, yes, but since I wasn’t into acapella, I didn’t go nuts for them…..not yet.
4. I Will Survive
My heart immediately fell for J None after watching this cover, and I spent an embarrassing amount of time replaying this song as if I was going through something. I even sometimes hear this song’s beat when I try to sleep at night, no kidding.
5. Something Like This
No offense but I seriously didn’t notice this song, not until I heard of Voiceplay’s version.
6. Man in the Mirror with Deejay Young
I can’t listen to this song without being LSS-ed. The video production is very simple compared to their other covers yet so emotionally touching. I have some strong feelings for this. But maybe it’s just the fact that this was one of the last songs J None has sung with the group as a member. *sobs at the corner*
7.A. Panic! in Four Minutes Part 1
Now, this is the cover that made me a worshipper of Voiceplay. I so love P! ATD and I so love Brendon Urie! Who doesn’t? Also, how hot is Geoff in this video with a button-down shirt and slightly long hair?!! I am dead.
7.B. Panic! in Four Minutes Part 2
I remember so anxiously waiting for this sequel to come out. And here’s a random thought, I can’t explain why and how much I love Layne at the 0:42 timestamp.
8. Butter
Another proof of how much I’d let Voiceplay ruin my life, I really am not into Kpop. Please don’t hate me because it’s nothing personal. But seriously, never in my life have I ever imagined being a fan of Kpop but Voiceplay is always the exception to my rule.
9. Warriors
Now, I love this cover because Layne is just too unbelievably talented in this! I so appreciate Layne.
10. Hoist the Colours with Jose Rosario Jr
Although I didn’t watch Pirates of the Caribbean before and I didn’t know this song at all, I had goosebumps when I first listened to this. Also, I’d like to point out that this has Eli singing in his raspy voice. My ovaries!
